Every Day Holds Potential for Progress | June Activities

Welcome to our monthly SPOTLIGHT!

This month we share highlights from some of the exciting learning experiences and activities taking place on the BRS campus and beyond!

IB CAS PROGRAMME

Love Charity Sales

Every year, students from the BRS IBDP programme organise a charity fair to raise funds for underprivileged children and children with Corobral Palsy.

This year, the activity introduced white canvas bags through a DIY approach, providing an opportunity for artistic creation and cultural exchange among the entire school community, allowing everyone to express their emotions.

Participants unleashed their design talents, creating their own designs on the white canvas bags and writing their heartfelt wishes before donating them to the children.

More than RMB 2,000 yuan was raised for a local children’s centre called “Warm Home” (暖暖之家 in Chinese).

Thank you to the entire BRS community for giving generously!

DECISION MAKERS

BRSMUN 2024

Founded in 2012, BRSMUN is proud to be a prestigious and ongoing Model UN at the school level.

At BRSMUN, our student delegates take on the roles of international decision-makers to debate the most pressing issues of the day and devise innovative, creative solutions.

True to the spirit of the United Nations, BRSMUN strives to provide a constructive forum for open dialogue on a range of complex issues.

The BRSMUN 2024 is a two-day international relations simulation for high school students. It challenged delegates to think critically in new and challenging ways about two issues: “Regulation of Artificial Intelligence” (for the Chinese section) and “Mail-order Brides” (for the English section).

Through the BRSMUN process, we provide our students with an experiential learning opportunity to hone their skills in diplomacy, leadership, negotiation, critical thinking, teamwork, public speaking and policy-making.

IBDP GRADE 11

IB ToK Exhibition

The Theory of Knowledge (ToK) course is a core element of the IBDP program, in which students explore questions about knowledge and the process of learning.

As part of their internal assessment for this course, students hosted an exhibition, welcoming the wider BRS community to explore the world of knowledge with them.

Each student selected and presented three objects in response to a prompt about knowledge, with the objects that they presented demonstrating different ways in which knowledge manifests itself in the world around us.

The four students carefully selected their objects, wrote their analysis in response to their prompt, prepared their displays and planned for the event, and presented their objects and commentary to the exhibition’s visitors.

Experimental Learning

Discover Germany

The Second Foreign Language Department of Beijing Royal School organised a cultural experience and exchange activity for 14 students learning and interested in German at the Goethe-Institut, the German Cultural Centre in Beijing, located in the 798 Art District.

Our teachers and students were kindly received by Ms. Hu, Director of the Goethe-Institut.

During the visit, our students were impressed by Germany’s advanced environmental technology. According to Ms. Hu, the Goethe Institut is exactly the same as the one built with the help of East Germany, and the air-conditioning system is installed underground.

German 3D printing technology and handicrafts, multifunctional tables and chairs made from eco-friendly paper also opened up new horizons for the students.

They were also free to explore and discover German specialities such as jigsaw puzzles, chess and old vinyl records.

The visit left a deep impression and good memories on the students. Through this cultural exchange activity, the students not only gained a better understanding of German culture, but also further stimulated their interest in learning German.

Learning through Reading

Vibrant Language

The Second Foreign Department held a book recommendation event where our senior high school students exchanged book reviews in six languages: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, French, German and Spanish.

This was the first time the activity had been extended to six languages.

Students at BRS are encouraged to choose a second foreign language elective from a wide range of options including Japanese, Korean, French, German and Spanish.

The study of a foreign language not only adds a dimension to the students’ academic programme, but also meets their individual developmental needs.

AP 2D ART

Student Gallery

The art exhibition celebrates the achievements of this year’s Year 11, AP 2D Art students. The student artists have each expressed their theme in a variety of ways.

The High School Art Department initiated a student run art gallery space by adapting Room 12322 into a venue for art & cultural events. The room is hoped to be a place where student artists and curators can present their work in a public setting.

The gallery will also provide a dedicated ‘art examination’ room. Both IBDP Art & AP Art require an exhibition component within their assessment. The gallery space will be an important assessment tool for both teachers and students.

The room is also intended for wider community use and the directors are excited to talk to anyone with proposals that further student voice at BRS.
